Logon scripts do thing for you like map drives, set system time, update software, pop up messages and the like.
They only create logs if you tell them to.
Normally, they're simple batch files in the \\server\netlogon directory (located in \\winnt\system32\Repl\Import\Scripts). However, there are many programs that can do much more than simple commands. Check out the Kix suite for more info.
