Voice Communication on LAN

Is it possible to Voice Conversation on LAN or Is there any software or any sort of Tool to enable Voice Communication on LAN, any recommendation will be appreciate.

Voice over IP is the term and is very new technology. My telephone system provider has been working on this for over a year now and tells me that their are some issues and protocols that need to be resolved. I am interested in this new service but I don't want to be their guenny pig. I wiil wait.

there are many products that will do this through the computer, like MS Netmeeting. I agree that voice over IP phone systems are not there yet.
