Comment: How do you get more than 16 colors when you do a new install of NT. When I try to change the adapter in Control Panel, it wont get rid of the "VGA COMPATIBBLE" driver

Reply: (edit)First of all you need to make sure that you have a compatible video card. Go to Microsoft's site and look up your video card on the HCL (Hardware Compatibility LIst)to make sure that NT supports it. Even though when you got your video card and it says it supports NT if its not on the list from Microsoft its no good. If it is on the HCL you need to find the video drivers for it. Just contact the maker of your card and they will provide the drivers for it. See without the bideo drivers you will not get more than 16 colors or be able to expand you screen size. I hope this helps you out, Keep posting if you need more.

Reply: (edit)Im sure this monitor is on the HAL list. It was running workstation, then I changed it to a PDC. I've been the the monitor and downloaded the driver. I've also tried other drivers on the NT CD. The system acts as if its installing the new driver and I reboot. BUT that "vga compatible display driver) just wont go away....

Reply: (edit)Have you tried putting it in a different pci slot or is it a agp? HAve you tried doing a fresh NT install? Do you have another machine with NT or you can put NT on and tried to install it there? Maybe your motherboard is messing things up. Is anything been done?

Reply: (edit)Ok, here is what I have been told to do by a friend....I haven't tried this yet, and I am having the exact same problem though I don't know why.... Anyway, here goes... He says remove the drivers from your winnt\system32\drivers directory...they should read something like ati.sys, ati.drv if you have an ati card, or find what drivers are installed if you have another card. Once you have removed these drivers, reboot 4-6 times to clear the registry of the install (hopefully). Then reinstall the drivers through the control panel or by right clicking on the desktop and clicking properties....(I'm sure you know the screen). Anyway, he says try that because he has seen it before....Maybe it will work.... who knows....I have to try this method tonight.... good luck
