Comment:
I've system with NT 4.0 & SP6 installed. It does'nt recognize my USB port. I've tried to install Iomega Zip 250MB USB with it's newest driver but does''nt work. How to make my system recognize USB port?
Windows NT 4.0 does not support Universal Serial Bus (USB) host controllers. There are no plans to provide USB support in Windows NT 4.0 in a future service pack.
There are a number of pieces of software that can be downloaded from the web which claim to enable USB support on NT. I've never tried them, but I have heard that they work. Search earlier posts on this subject and you will get the sites to download from.
IoMega do have USB support for their Jazz drive under NT4 & it works a treat - we use it on numerous laptops without a problem. There are also several 3rd party usb drivers for NT4.
I have a Iomega 250mb usb zipdrive and I use it on NT4 with sp4. Just install the drivers/software that comes with the thing and you should be good. Only thing is that you have to turn off the computer to connect it...so much for the facility of using usb...
If all the already given explanation are not enough, the key is here that USB is a "Plug and Play" system, while by definition, NT is NOT a Plug and Play OS. There are some software packages that enables USB on NT, but the bottom line is that you will still probably need to shutdown and restart your system to install a USB device.
Here's something weird: we just installed NT4 on a box with a USB mouse plugged into the USB port and didn't realize it shouldn't work until after we finished. And it was working from the bare install all the way through SP6a. So I went searching and found this forum ... any ideas or comments?
