Comment: I rebooted my file server this morning, and most of the services won't start now, rendering it useless....the wokstation service won't start because of error 0052 "Servername is not a valid name. Duplicate name existys on network"....any ideas? HELP!

Reply: (edit)Is your fileserver using a static IP? I had a similar problem with a computer using DHCP. I had to release the IP and then reboot.

Reply: (edit)When the workstation service starts it tries to register with WINS but apparently there's already a device on the network with the same netbios name. To find the other device make sure your server is powered down then use another server or workstation to ping the device by name. You could also use nbtstat to track down the other device. You could also check the WINS tables to see if you can find the cause of the problem. As a last resort you could try changing the netbios name of your server but I wouldn't recommend it.
