I have this same problem. I have a Dell laptop with Windows 2000 NT workstation on it. It is not compatible with anything. It is a pent 3.
I have the 98 win boot disc and the 98 OS with upgrade that I want to install.
I have no NT discs at all. Can anyone tell me what prompt to use in DOS to start the uninstall of NT?
I do have the 98 boot disc though.
Thank you

You dont uninstall it, you will be reformatting the disk and installing 98 afterwards if that is what you want to do.

Boot with Win98 Startup boot floppy and key in fdisk, allow large drive support. Delete all partitions and create a new one and make it active.
(Only problem would be if you have an extended NTFS partition as fdisk can't delete these. In this case find delpart on google.)
Exit fdisk, reboot and do a format c:
Put in the 98CD and reboot with the floppy (with CD-ROM support), key in setup
Find drivers.

Windows 2000 NT? What is it not compatible with? And, same problem as what/who exactly?
Soylent Green is PEOPLE!!!

Using a Windows 98 boot disk, then Fdisk, what effect would delete the non-MS-DOS partition have on a NTFS extended partition? Make it active first? Or will it work on any partition?
CoffeeBreak

It would be impossible to make a extented partition active, a logical drive in a extended partition, yes.
CoffeeBreak

FDISK cannot delete a logical partition that is formatted NTFS, nor the extended partition in which it resides.

A logical drive on an extended partition is not bootable. Only a primary partition is bootable.
You can download the latest version of fdisk which you can use to delete the present NT partitions so you can then use 98 fdisk to partition. Killdisk, and /or the drive manufacturers download utilities can do the same. All are free online.

Just so u understand...
You will be loosing EVERYTHING on the computer when you format it.
Just wasnt sure if you understood that.

You have NT, not 2000. If you don't know the difference are you up to this task? Have you ever used fdisk, or installed an OS? Do you already have your drivers downloaded from Dell for when you reinstall? Your signature shows you know little about the machine, so just checking.
