Comment:

I only have NT4 installed on my PC.
I want to get rid of it and start again with Windows 95.
Has anyone any suggestions? At the moment I can't even boot to DOS.

HELP!

If you have a single partition and it's NTFS...

Using a DOS5x/6x or a Win'9x boot-disk (with Fdisk/Format included) boot-up with the disk; run Fdisk to inspect partitions; opt to remove/delete the (NTFS) non-DOS partition.

Then use Fdisk to reconfigure your HD into a couple of partitions at least; one for the OS/apps. and one data. Once partitions created/formatted, run the:

" sys c: "

command from the boot-disk (not the " " ) and then press Enter. Remove boot floppy and you should boot to the formatted C: drive? Then install '9x in the usual way.

If the drive has two partitions (Primary and Extended) and the Extended has NTFS then Fdisk will not remove it. Use the NT set-up routine (you neeed the disks) to remove it first - in fact delete all partitions via the set-up routine; i.e.:

Boot with disk-1; follow on screen prompts; at the point where you can create/delete partitions - choose delete. Delete 'all' partitions'. Reboot PC with '9x boot disk and reconfigure HD for '95.

If you don't have access to NT set-up disks - can't make a set??? - then use the Delpart.exe util to delete all partitions.

It's available 'free download = 30K " at:

http://hercules.lss.ksu.edu/download/MSSTUFF/index.htm
(parent site: http://hercules.lss.ksu.edu)

It deletes just about any partition - permanently.

Then run the Fdisk/Format routine etc. (boot-floppy) to reconfigure the HD, and install '95

The set-up routine is one of the standard/text-book/M$ ways to remove NT -regardless of its file format(s)...

If your NT is FAT16...
again run Fdisk; inspect, and then opt to delete all partitions; using Fdisk (again) reconfigure HD for '95; format partitions; install '95.

(The other way to delete NT (if NT = FAT16) - is to use the Deltree util from DOS.)

Remember too if 'your' '95 is '95a then you are limited to FAT16 - 2Gig max - all the way for partitions; if OSR2/'95b or c, then you can use FAT32 (exceeds 2Gig limit) as well... This obviously influences the way you reconfigure your HD... If intending to use FAT32 then it may be better to use a '98 boot-disk to reconfigure the HD?

http://www.bootdisk.com

for assorted boot-disks.

Query: why use '95 - why not go to '98SE?
