I have the same problem. I can't open .avi files that I downloaded from Internet. Everytime I try to open it, this error message "Could not open file bla bla bla.avi because there is an error in the program." I thought there's something wrong with my Quick Time, I I re-download it. Still won't work. Have any idea what the problem is?

Thanks.

also, you could try ATI's codecs (www.ati.com) in case you have .avi files which were captured off of tv or something and encoded with an ATI device, then you will need the ATI codecs to decompress these .avis

ggo to www.intel.com and search for "indeo codec" if none of the above works. This will render most other avi files.
