The PC (NT4 SP6) was working fine in the domain. Until I tried an upgrade of MySQL-server (don't know if it got something to do with it).

In our network we have 2 servers: 1 Novell-server, 1 W2000-server (domain). When starting the computer, everything is normal until I fill in the logon screen and press enter. I waited fot 20 minutes, nothing happens ... no logon. Even in vga-mode.

The only way I can access my computer again, is to unplug the network-card (unplugging the wire is not enough). Then I can switch to a workgroup (instead of the domain), plug the network-card, restart the computer, I can logon to the Novell-server, access the shared files on the W2000-server (after filling in my name & password). I get an IP-adres from the DHCP-service on the W2000-server.

There's nothing strange in the 'event viewer'.
In the network-identification I can switch back to the domain, supprisingly it shows a 'welcome to the domain' immediatly. Then I have to reboot the computer, but the same problem appears after trying to logon.
What I did notice: when I start the computer, and wait a bit to logon, I normally got a message that a service didn't start (it's a zip-drive who's not connected), but when the computer is switched to the domain (instead of the workgroup) that message doesn't show up.

What can I do about it?
Did I accidently removed a service?

this is why, as standard operating procedure. you always make a erd before any system changes.

Start by reappling your service pack.

you don't mention if connecting to the novell box is fine. Or what happens if you don't logon to the domain.

Worse case, uninstall all networking. Delete the machine account from the server. Reinstall networking, recreate the machine account and rejoin the domain. Reapply your service pack at the end as is recommended by MS.

Thanks a lot!

More details about the problem: connecting to the Novell network worked just fine, but when I tried to logon to the W2K-domain the OS freezed and the logon screen didn't disappear.

Here's what I did to solve the problem (thanks to wanderer):
1 Removed and reinstalled TCP/IP services
. and the TCP/IP protocol on the NT4 machine.
2 Reinstalled NT4 SP6, but I had to set
. SCHANNEL.DLL in the update.inf file (of
. the unpacked SP6) as comment
. before I could reinstall SP6.
. +-------------
. | [CheckSecurity.System32.files]
. | ;SCHANNEL.DLL
. | SECURITY.DLL
. | NTLMSSPS.DLL
. +-------------
3 Made a backup copy of the default user
. profile
4 Overwrited the default user profile with
. my own profile
5 Removed and recreated the machine in the
. domain (AD)
6 Tried to logon to domain (this took time,
. because the OS had to recreate a new
. profile with my profile as default,
. initial profile).
7 Fortunately everything was, the way it was
. before. Only the 'hosts' file had to be
. customized.

Maybe this explanation is useful for others.
