Hi,
I have a situation that I seek for HELP. I have an NT 4.0 box that suddenly drops from the domain. I was unable to access any of the network drive or browse the network neighborhood. There were no nodes in the network neighborhood. When I try to add back to the domain, I get an error message "The domain controller for this domain cannot be located."
First, I have the administrator priviledge to the domain since I am a system administrator. I have tried several methods of trying to add back to the domain for the pc desktop.
1. re-install the TCP/IP protocol
2. remove from the domain and add to the workgroup, and add back to domain.
3. remove the pc from the domain by using the server manager utility.
4. copy the lmhosts.sam file from the BDC server.I was able to ping to different machines on the network as well as many of the websites. At this moment, I can only think of re-install the NT4.0 and start over again. Before I proceed with this step, I would like to ask if anyone out there can assist me. Thanks

First, REMOVE the computer back to a Workgroup. REBOOT. Log back in and RENAME the computer. It might be as simple as adding the letters NT to the end of the machine REBOOT. (My guess is that the name of the computer is also the name of a USER in the domain, quite possibly the one using the computer). Add the computer to the domain with its new name. REBOOT.
Yes, it takes a bunch of REBOOTS but do not try to skip these when you get a machine that refuses to be added to the domain. Sounds stupid but the above works great; especially if the machine name was that of a user.
