Comment:

While accessing shared drives in an NT server (from Windows 98 workstation) of a domain, I encountered a message prompting me to enter password for \\servername\$IPC.

The workstation has been logged on to the domain as it is able to access shared drives in other NT servers.

I believe the cause of this issue is because the SAM of the NT server is not in sync with the PDC of the domain.

Besides removing and adding the NT server to the domain, is there any way I can hack into the shared drives of the NT server (e.g. retrieving the password)?

Is the account you're using to login added to the Permissions of the NT Server Share? Doesn't seem to me that it is. The error you're getting is caused when a non-authenticated user tries to access an Administrative share on a computer.

So, you'll need to have your Domain Admin check the permissions of the share on the offending NT Server and see if the user account you're using to login to the Domain has permission to access the Share.
