The network cannot reach my NT server

I did install my NIC card (Linksys EtherPCI LAN CARD
II) on an NT4 server. The install
of the card went fine. But there
are couple of concerns:
1. My card seems to be well installed
(no error message during the install of it's
driver+ in
CONTROL_PANEL->NETWORK->ADAPTER,
this NIC card is there + under
CONTROL_PANEL->Protocols->TCP_IP, the IP of the
NOC card is there + in CONTROL_PANEL->DEVICES,
I can see my Linksys Adapter with "STARTED" as status
and STARTUP=AUTOMATIC. And the green light at the
back of my NIC card send me the signal that it works,
same thing on the hub
it is connected to! So seems that
my NIC card is functional. But how come I
do not see the other pcs in my NT4 network neighborhood,
and how come the other pcs cannot me my NT4 server.
weird, since netbeui and tcp/ip common settings are ok!
2. When I go to
CONTROL_PANEL->NETWORK->ADAPTER, and I
double click on the
NIC card, I get a message asking me to enter the
ETHERNET ID of the card. I do not have that. And
anyway, I has this card installed
on several NT servers and never had to fill
in that ETHERNET ID. I have an option that says "select
Ignore if you want the driver to work on any free 940
adapter"..but if I select that, I still have no access to the
properties of my NIC card.

I think you should try a new NIC. Why are you using 2 protocals? I think you should also try only with tcp/ip and see what happens...

I agree with the other reply, lose the NetBEUI protocol. Try and run some diagnostic software on the card. There may have been some diagnostics on the floppies or CD that came with the NIC. Have you fitted this NIC to replace an old one? If so why? was it because the old one was 10mbits/sec and the new one 100mbits/sec? If so, change the cable between server and hub/switch as it may not be correct for 100mbits/sec operation. You could put the old one back and see if it will work.

Also check the spelling of the Domain and/or workgroups. I have used the Linksys and never did get a message asking for the ethernet ID. Have you tried to ping 172.0.0.1? If you get a responce then the TCP/IP protocal works. If not, you need to change the card. Also try pinging the IP adress from the server. If that works ping a remote pc. If that doesn't work the cable or hub port could be bad. If you can ping other pc's, I would double check the domain and/or workgroup.

I may be off track for a server but, when I change a NIC in a PC previously connected to a domain, I have to get the machine (because the machine name already exists in the domain) to join the domain again after the new NIC is installed (Network Properties change it to WORKGROUP then DOMAIN again).

Hope this helps...

Rob, you got the ip wrong it's 127.0.0.0 and not 172... Best to ping 'localhost', it will give you 127.0.0.0

The first thing I would advice you to do is to on the creat on the server the different users of the domain ( go in manager of domain and user) after creating the differents users, you then go in the client computer which can be configurated on win95 then in the properties of the network neighbourhood, the option client for the microsoft network, you take the propreties and activate the option log on in a domain and finally write the name of domain created in windows nt server.

If it does not work write me;
