I am trying to install a BDC to the LAN but when i reached the setup stage whereby i am required to enter the Domain, Administrator's Name n Password, i received this error msg "The domain controller for this domain cannot be located". What should i do to proceed on with the installation? I have already added the computer on the PDC.
Thanks

Sounds like a problem with the NIC card or Cat5 cable? Do you have any status lights on the card? If not then you don't have a network conection active. Check the card and cables making sure you have a "good" connection before you intall the OS is always a good idea.

Double check what Bill said, though it could be hardware it is most likely a setting error. Make sure your protocol settings are correct, names are spelled right, caps is not on when entering password, etc. Quick warning in case you didn't know: you can not add a domain controller to a network unless the PDC is available and you can't change a domain controller's name without re-installing. So, only install the BDC if the PDC can be accessed, don't try and renaming it to complete the install with plans to join the domain later or you will have to start all over. Good Luck!

In order to join the domain the BDC must be able to resolve the domain <1Ch> netBIOS name. Make sure your WINS IP is correct on the BDC or, if using an LMSHOSTS file, you have an entry for the PDC IP with #PRE and #DOM:domain_name. Try pinging the PDC by IP and by netBIOS name to check connectivity and netBIOS name resolution. Also, make sure the BDC isn't using a netBIOS name that is already on the network otherwise WINS will deny registering it. Run NBTSTAT -n on the BDC to check if the workstation and server service are registered with WINS. To see if another computer is using the netBIOS name of the BDC, shutdown the BDC and run NBTSTAT -a bdc_name from another PC (where bdc_name is the netBIOS name you're trying to use for the new BDC).
Good Luck.
