Hi - Using NT Server 4.0 SP5

I have had this information notice from the event viewer;

Event ID: 26
System Process - Lost Delayed-Write Data

The system was attempting to transfer file data from buffers to \Device\Harddisk2\Partition1\Archive\SR\defect.xls. The write operation failed, and only some of the data may have been written to the file.

Having looked up on the MS site there could be several things wrong... most probably defective network hardware. Has anyone experience is trying to resolve this problem?
Where do you start? The file in question is only 43Kb.

thanks for any pointers
bowza

It's being caused by a hardware problem on your network. Most likely a defective cable.

See this link:

hey Doctor

I looked at that article prior to posting, but the title reads 'Event ID 26 Appears If Large File Transfer Fails'(q145952), 43Kb is not large...

Then again, I suppose hardware can fail with any file size... there were additional articles, eg q252974, q247065 that were possibilities...

Time to start testing cables...

thanks

Not sure if this helps anyone...

I have come across a similar event REPEATEDLY in differnt NT4SP4 workstations - with NO Network connection! On-board NIC enabled, but not configured in NT...

This is a big problem at the mo for me - any clues anyone?

Also, I found another event following this: "Event 26 (again!) - Out-of-Date Firmware Error".

Plus!!!! "Bad block" messages - BUT NOTHING found by ChkDsk, ScanDisk etc.

In addition, the PC usually repeatedly stops responding momentarily for 2-3 seconds. Ctl-Alt-Del causes grey blank screen. Power off is only route!

Saw this latter problem on a Desktop NT Workstation - after I had disconnected from the LAN and then reconnected - the system crashed as above (needed rebuild!)

I also have a customer that gets this error after a large file (1.7gb) is copied from partition1 on drive 0 to partition1 on drive 1. Both drives are on the same scsi controller and the data is being copied using a backup script.

The OS is Windows NT 4 workstation with SP5.
