I have been trying to install nt server 4.0 on a compaq 5700t 500mhz PIII.
It has a hard drive of 10 gig. I partition 3 gig for nt using nsf instead
of fat 16. It goes through the whole process till it tells me to remove the
cd and any disk from the floppy and reboot. when i do this it says "no
operating system".
Now, I tried the atapi.exe patch i heard about for use with large drives ,
but when running it it tolde me it couldnt find any such devices.
Obviously it didnt help me. a freind told me to check the bios for boot
procedure. It was set to go cd rom, hd then floppy. I changed it to hd,
floppy then cd-rom. No change. He then told me to check if it was set up
for lba in bios, but I cant find that out in the bios. I think compaq's
bios is a little different, and doesnt give that option. Compaq sends these
pc's out with a partion on the hard drive calles "system save", and it is
set as drive d:. I didnt delete this when partitioning the hard drive,
could this be a problem? I need help! In the words of Dr. Evil, "throw me
a bone here people". Believe me, any help on this would be greatly
appreciated. Oh yeah, after all of this, i go back to booting from the cd
rom and look at the partition, and the one i set up for nt is listed as
damaged. Now if I boot with a win98 boot disk to get to the dos prompt, the
nt directory is there pretty as you please, with all the info in it. Man, I
am lost.

That happened to me several times. Im not sure how i fixed it but it had something to do with the boot sector being corrupted.

No shit!

Tried reinialising the master boot record? Some idiots around here refer to it as rewriting the master boot record.

I finally got mine working by deleting the compaq save partition it had set up as d drive. After deleting that nt was easy to install. I had the nt partition set as active but compaq save must have interfered somehow.
