Comment:
I have a standard Dell optiplex that came factory installed with Windows NT workstation and I cannot get the soundcard to work. I am not able to play cd's or wav files at all. I have logged onto the machine with admin rights and I can't even find a place where I can Install or update the sound driver itself.

Go to Control Panel>Multimedia, click Devices. Doubleclick on Audio Devices, if there's one installed remove it. You may also consider removing old INF and system files for that soundcard. Reboot, come back to Multimedia>Advanced>Add drivers from here. It should work right away. If the CD player doesn't work, open the case, check if the cord from the CDROM is pluged into the card properly.

Something else to consider: What service pack are you running on your Dell? If you install SP4 on the system, you can then go and install the file PNPISA.INF to your system - this will allow NT to detect Plug-n-Play cards. Usually, this is all that need be done to get the sound card to be found by the system. The PNPISA file is located on the SP4 CD. Just right-click the file and click on Install. Restart the machine. It will then be able to detect the presence of PNP devices. Email me directly if you have any other questions about it. Good luck.

The Dell's have a special procedure to remove the Montego Sound drivers correctly. If this is not done before you reinstall the driver the sound becomes disabled. Do a search at support.dell.com for these directions. Good luck!!
