i can ping the nt machine just can't see it.
assigning my own ip's.
need help i am sure it's something simple i am missing.

Hi,
the Problem is the Server-Service. It's not running. I guess in your Eventlog is an error like: Server-Service didn't could not be started, not enough memory.....
This Problem occurs when you installed DFÜ-Netword or RAS.
The Solution is trivial:Just reinstall the ServicePack and the Server-Service starts fine and you will be able to make the share and the NT-Machine will be seen again by the others.

If Responce #1 is not resolving the issue yo might want to check WINS server settings on the NT WKS machines...

you don't get the sharing option in explorer unless you are logged on to the local machine, administrator or not.
you can set shares using server manager but need to type long paths, or by the admin wizard if it is on .
easier still use winfile instaed of explorer. just type winfile at the run command. that will allow you to do all you want ( but no right-click menu I think).

@ Wolfie,
I think you didn't understand the Problem.
@ all,
Bruce send me an Email, that he reinstalled the ServicePack and that fixed the Problem.
So again: Thats a known Bug after installing the RAS-Service or DFÜ-Network !!
twin

apologies. but I believe I did. nt explorer as installed has no share facility. Microsoft advise using winfile for this purpose. However later service packs did incorporate this function. when its missing as in this case, its not a fault or corruption, merely a feature .

sp3 does it I believe and its not something you would ever realise unless you remember the days.....
but service packing after any change is always advisable anyhow.

@ Wolfie,
OK again !!:
This is not a Problem of NT-Explorer !! The Problem is definetely the Server-Service. When it's not running you CANNOT share Files. The second Problem of Bruce was that he can't be seen by Win98-Machines. Of course he can't because the Server is not running. A Look in Event Log shows that there is an Error like: " There's not enough Memory to run Server.....", or something like that.
So, when you reinstall (and Bruce said SP5 was installed before !!) the Service Pack, this Error is fixed, because the DFÜ and RAS-DLL's are updated again (I said before, that this error occurs when installing RAS or DFÜ-Network from original-NT-CD).By the Way: This Problem is a known Issue and it's been discussed at Knowledge Base a long time ago.....
I hope this time you believe me :-)

But I believed you the first time. You obviously had the full info and provided the preferred solution and my hat is off to you.
However , it is an fact worth knowing that nt explorer really couldn't see or create shares shares until the later service packs.
I currently work on a site with around 8,000 ntclients, and myself and the rest of the administrators use winfile for this very reason. surely that's worth knowing as a fact in itself irrespective of wether it was a correct diagnosis in this case.

Hi Wolfie,
of course it's worth knowing the described thing with the Explorer/winfile.exe. I know NT 4.0-Times of no ServicePack, although I had never Problems with creating Shares with Explorer , I used Winfile at the Beginning, too. I think, I just didn't understand you exactly because of my worse english :-)
Hope I look not arrogant (is it the right word ??) to you now
.
regards
twin
