I have windows NT Server SP6a running at home with the optional CD loaded on it for ISS I want to set up a FTP server this is the problem I'm having. I have the server as a DHCP server and it's running off a Linksys cable router with a couple Workstations attaching to it. I have DNS loaded on the server too. And I can't ping the IP that my cable service provides. When I go to set up the ftp service what should I use for the IP the ISP's IP or my server's IP. which is 10.0.0.1 which is an internal IP. I tried to use the ISP's IP and that dosen't work either. Can some one help me with my FTP problem.
Thanks in advance.
Carlo

There could be several problems.
The FTP service has to log on locally, so you'll need to set that right in User Manager. You need to make sure that your publishing directory haces the right access so that users can either read or write depending on what you want to do.
If the service doesn't start correctly, you'll have to fix that first. Just go through it step by step, and it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

This is more a TCP/IP problem. For FTP server or web server or e-mail you should use official, registered IPs. Otherwise your FTP cannot be accessed from the inet.
Internally you are using IPs from the private IP space. Those IPs like 10.x.x.x or
192.168.x.x will not be routed in the internet.
Ask your provider for a bunch of IPs.

OK. I'm not quite sure what you mean about giving rights. I am able to make it a Intranet FTP but when I give it me ISP IP address it brings back an error saying unable to connect? What am I doing wrong? And like I said you not able to ping my IP does that make a difference? I really don't feel like getting a public IP for a cable modem at home. This is a side project. But there's got to be a way because my friend lives right down the road and has a cable modem through the same company and runs a FTP 3rd party software and it works. Any advice will help.
Thanks

You need to forward ftp requests on your linksys router to the ip address you have the server running on. Go to advanced the port forwarding on the configuration page of the router. That should work.

Setting up the forward in the advanced mode is very important (as solemioe mentioned), but there two other things. The first I didn't verify but I saw it in a bulliten board and believe it might be true. You MUST foward port 21 to your internal FTP machine of choice. Other ports should work but don't. The second, which had me pulling my hair out for several days is the not all FTP clients work externally even though they work internally. Get WS-FTP95 from twocows.com (free). It works well while other FTP clients do not. I haven't figured out why though. It has to do with "handshaking" with the router. I'll figure it out later when I have solved all other known computer problems. :-)

In the last posting I mentioned getting WS-FTP95 from twocows.com. It is really tucows.com and the download is called WS_FTP LE 5.08
