Comment:

I have a little home network accessing the internet thru a cable modem...I use a cable router to a hub and out to my various pc's...I also have NT4.0 Server installed, with a shared printer and folders...

I would like to set up a FTP server...
I believe I need to install IIS 2.0, no problem...

And perhaps some other FTP Server software, but I'm not sure...any suggestions???

Question is...
How do I handle the IP address situation...
I have a dynamic IP address from my cable ISP, changes every 2 days or so...then going into my cable router I NAT to my LAN on the 192.168.0.x address...

How do I proceed with this???

Thanx
Steve

I can help you out with the second part. You said that your IP changes everynow and then so to get around that take note of your DNS name given to by Rogers and when your friends want to connect to your FTP give them the Full DNS name of your machine; the DNS name never changes so whenever your IP changes it will map your FTP users to the changed IP address via the DNS name. And then when they connect to your rogers IP they will be NATed over to your private address on you local area network.

Maybe that will partially help you out.

I have a LAN at home with XP on two PCs and Solaris on the 3rd.
I use a router and which gives each computer a private IP address..
I can telnet into the Sun but not FTP into it is permitted.
so I am trying to get FTP into my Sun.
in regards to the the problem with changing IP with your cable company, just leave your modem plugged in, and your router will maintain your IP address , set it's IP to the real-world address.
then for each Windos computer I turn off DHCP and assign my own IP , 192.168.XXX.XXX

I would just use Serv-U 4.0.0.4 to set up a PC as a server. It's what I'm using. You can get it at http://serv-u.com

It's easy to set up. Don't believe me? Connect to my PC (if the computer is on...). FTP Address: 68.112.180.158 Port: 8585 User: robo Pass: robo (this was used so someone could send me a replacement copy of RoboCop 3D)

I'm pretty new to linux, and I don't have a clue how to set-up my own FTP server. Could any of you help me out?
