Slowly bu surely I am getting to grips with NT and building a very productive peer to peer network. However, I am having problems with one of the machines as I cannot get it to recognise an Adaptec AVA 1505 and sound blaster cards. I have tried changing the slots, taking them out and rebooting and then reinstalling, I have tried generic drivers - all to no avail. I understand the concet that NT is not plug and play in the same way that win 95 and 98 are, and that drivers must be supplied that NT can use to identify the card. Can anyone suggested what else I can.

Thanks

NT wont identify your card!!! thats for sure!! Using the correct method to install your hardware!
First insert the soundlblaster card -> install through -> Control Panel -> Multimedia (dont run the setup of the installation CD, never works fine).
Goto Tab: Devices -> Button: Add..
double click or select Unlisted or Updated driver. Use the OEMSetup.inf of your driverdisk. Install your soundcard!
Reboot and test your soundcard.

second:
install your SCSI-card by going to control panel -> SCSI-adapters.
Goto Tab Drivers and press button Add...
install your hardware!!!
Reboot and test!

Good luck!

Thanks for your advice. I have followed it, however the problem lies with the fact that the computer will not detect the boards. I have tried putting them into other slots and I know that power is getting to the soundblaster card because the speakers buzz if I fiddle with the jack plug. I should welcome your advice.

what you mean... does your computer not detect the SCSI card?? have you checked your bios?? how many cards you have in your cardbusses? your question is a bit irrelivant, because you wont see a nice hardware detection in NT , like shown in win95, when she detects something ...

Danny - thanks for your help but the fact that my computer will not identify the cards is not irrelevant and I understand the difference between NT and 95. The fact remains that even when the drivers for the cards have been installed (even when following your advice to the letter) the computer will not recognise that the cards are there. At start up for example I ger error messages telling me that a device has failed to start, and guess what it is the SCSI card, and sound blaster will not install and further than a dialog box which specifically states that the card is not detected. The bit about the speakers buzzing was a red herring but I wrote it in frustration!

Actually NT is Plug and Play after you have installed pnpisa which is located on the NT CD-ROM.
it is located :\drvlib\pnpisa\x86\pnpisa.
Right click this file and install.
Re-boot your system and it will now find any new cards you have added and prompt you for drivers.
Before doing this completely uninstall all of your cards that haven't been configured properly then install pnpisa.
It worked for me!!
