Whenever I try to run scandisk to fix filesystem errors (the first option) I get this error message:
"The disk check could not be performed because exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained."It asks if you want to schedule a disk check at startup but it never does so. This happens on every one of my workstations and servers when i try to run scandisk. What does one do to get around this? I tried running "CHKDSK C: /F/R" at the command prompt but i get the same message. Someone suggested turning virtual memory off i believe, so i tried that, but i still get the error message. What gives?! How is one supposed to repair disk errors if NT wont allow you?
TIA
Jackol

I know of a registry hack that allows one to "turn off" the chkdisk at the next startup of NT. I'm thinking that this setting may be turned on, allowing the chkdisk to run. Sorry, I do not know the hack, but look at jsiinc.com, it'll probably have that particular hack. Worth a try anyway.....

I run scandisk from accessories. Reply says top level folder full - delete some files. Also pronounces temporary internet files exceeds 259 characters w/ file names included. Will not defrag until this error is fixed. thanks.

my screen pops up with you have performed an illegal operation press details it says real player has an error i scan disk for errors and it gets to 41801 out of 52983 and totally freezes up i have ti control alt delete for my computer to do anything and then it wants to come back on in safe mode i have also lost my sound and have just put in a new sound card help me please

I found the answer....I know it's a year late, but maybe this information will help someone else.
From Error-Checking, you click "Check Now..."
Then a dialog box comes up.
To get the error in the base question, you click "Automatically fix filesystem errors".
To get it to run properly click "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors".
Then it will run.
