Ok I have a strange one. At my office here we have a cable modem. We also have a Windows NT network. We have Wingate set up as a Proxy server so that all the work stations can access the internet. This works fine (mostly). But I've noticed in the Win NT 4.0 Task Manager that my CPU usage is pinned constantly at 50% on my workstation. I have a Dual 200 Pent Pro system so that renders one of my processors almost useless. I use 3d Studio Max which uses both processors nicely, until now. Under Processes (task manager) I've notice the file that is taking up the CPU is called RpcSs.exe. Which I believe stands for Remote Procedure Call Service... something (because I looked under services and found something called that.) I can't end the process because access is denied. Anyone know what's going on?
Eric

First have u checked your RAM. Not enough memory can my cause high processor usage due to excess paging.

I don't think so, this computer has about 300 megs of ram. And the hardrive isn't running, it's the cpu that is running. It's killing me I can't figure it out.
Eric

Did you ever find a solution to your problem with the RpcSs.exe constantly running. I am having a similar problem only on my machine it is pegging the CPU out at about 99%.
Would appreciate any insight as to a fix for this problem. Thanks

check out http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q193/2/33.asp. it has this issue addressed. Now, can anyone tell me what rpcss.exe is for

I've got the same problem, NT 4.0 SP5 (which the MS article says should not allow the spoofing). My RPCSS starts at bootup running near 100% of CPU.

I was also having this problem but with Service Pack 6a on a Dell laptop. The hotfix (snk-fixi.exe)didn't help because it detected newer code.
I ended up un-installing the service pack (to SP3) then re-installing it. Everything seems to be OK now but I have yet to test if it will stay that way.

Same problem, related to installing FAXserve 5 for NetWare client on any NT box w. > SP3, or trying to uninstall FAXserve client. Vendor is aware of a problem under certain circumstances, but has no clue. Sounds like MS needs to come to the rescue...

I also have a problem with prcss.exe running.
I have a cable modem and began running a firewall. This programme is being blocked by my firewall. It it trying to communicate with something on the internet. I am running WIN98 and do not like the idea that something in my computer is trying to access the internet at all times of the day with out a user at the terminal. The programme does not seem to be associated with anything but with Microsoft. I would like to know what this programme is trying to do.Regards,
Terry

Hey guys,
I did a clean install of Win 98 and then put VB6 and Office 2000 on my pc at home and had no problems. I then installed Visual Studio 6 on and started having this rpcss.exe problem. When I boot up my PC now it connects to the internet right away. OK here are the questions.
1 What does this exe do?
2 Has anyone tried removing it from the registry? and if so what happened?I hope this thread is still alive any help is most welcome guys.
TIA
Will

Hi,I hope this thread is still working.
I came across this rpcss.exe since yesterday, whenever I start my pc it is shown illegal operation on it and should be shut down. When I open IE, IE seems to give out illegal operation notice as well. It just happened a day ago, has it sth to do with the free ISP or firewalls from Vshield?

I'vealso got this problem under NT4 and SP6a. What I've done recently is the installation of Office 2000 and IE4.0 and 5.5.
I also expereinced that a process called connsrv.exe is sharing 100% CPU usage with the rpcss.exe

I installed Visual Studio 6 today and I am running behind a firewall. Each time I went online, the firewall asked me if I wanted to allow "Distributed COM Services" to access the internet. I checked the firewall log and found that the RPCSS.exe file made the attempts. I found it located in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder and renamed it to "RPCSS.XXX" . I have rebooted several times and have been on the internet several times since and all systems appear to be functioning OK, and the firewall has not asked about it anymore. I am using Windows98 SE.
