resolution set too high

my friend has set his resolution too high for his monitor to handle and when he starts up his computer he can not see the desktop. he is running windows nt workstation --- how do we get it back to its original 800x600 resolution?

Well I guess that is why the test button is there, and also the warning that says are you sure!!

Ok when you boot you are given 2 options NT and NT VGA mode, select VGA mode.

If you do not see those options, your *friend* has set the timer to zero....so you need to edit the boot.ini file and change the zero to five or something other than zero.

If your *friend* has formatted the primary partition in NTFS, you now have a bigger job! as you can't boot from a floppy to edit the boot.ini file....

The easiest way around this is to install a dummy NT...ie new setup but in a DIFFERENT DIRECTORY.....very important you don't go over the winnt directory...once you have done a simple install you simply alter the boot.ini file and select your origional nt in VGA mode...and change the resolution

simple huh
