Comment: i have just bought laptop with NT 4 on it, dont like it an want to format the hard drive and replace the OS with 98. please help me, i can get to the ms dos by using a 98 start up disk, i can change the prompt to c:\. then i type 'format C:' as i would in 98, but i get a message saying 'fotrmt not supported on drive c: format terminated'..in win 98 it would have just started the format, but not nt. can someone please tell me how to format nt removing it and then to replace it with 98..Thanks in advance.

Reply: (edit)I suspect that the hard drive partion(s) are NTFS in which case you cannot just format the C: drive. Boot from the 98 floppy and run fdisk.exe and check what partition types it(or they) are. The thing is that NT4 only supported FAT16 and NTFS. Win 98 supports FAT16 and FAT32. So, it is best if you use fdisk.exe to remove all partitions, reboot again and the recreate a standard FAT32 partion to install 98 into. BUT before you do all that, make sure you have identified all devices that will need Win98 drivers i.e. the video controller & monitor type, modem(if fitted), sound card(if fitted) etc etc.
