Comment: Hi Is there a easy way to remote admin a NT4 server ? Currently the server is located off-site, its behind a FreeBSD firewall, what I would like to do is to dial into the server using TCP/IP (server has connection through the FreeBSD box). What software would be best for this ? just like to check the backup log and file scan for errors when the office is closed. Another problem is I may wish to install software on the server, sometime it req.d a reboot, how can I get NT4 to reboot and give connection access again as the CTRL-ALT-DEL logon box will appear first. Thanks

Reply: (edit)Try searching for VNC. It's a tool we use to save walking around a lot. You install it on the target machine as a service and then from another machine you use the VNC Viewer to access the remote system and bring its console up on your screen. There are better packages but VNC is free!

Reply: (edit)VNC is good but it is V. insecure. If you are using vnc I would suggest obtaining some windoze ssh software too

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the suggestions guys. Are there any good commercial software you would recommend ? as the customers will be happy to pay to make life easier on both ends. I had a look at NetOp and PC-Anywhere, but unsure about how I would logon to the NT4 box after a reboot remotely. Thanks

Reply: (edit)With NetOp there are no problems logging on to NT after a reboot remotly. This is also a system with high security. I would also reccomend DameWare Remote Control. This is similar to NetOp, but has a lot of built in NT-tools. I'm not sure about the remote-reboot in DameWare.
