At some point I deleted some files from my NT server and they went into the recycle bin as usual. I had deleted some other files after that and at one point I finally wanted to empty the recycle bin. When I went to empty the recycle bin, I was given an error message stating that it couldn't delete some file which came from the urlcache folder because it was in use. I then went and shut down all services that I could in hopes that the file would free itself up, and I would be able to delete the recycler folder and restore my recycle bin. I had no such luck though. Windows NT does not allow dos prompt booting without some 3rd party software, such as the full version of ERD Commander for example. This software would let me boot to dos because it reads NTFS partitions and I would then be able to delete "Recycler" and windows NT would re-create the recycle bin. Does anyone know of an easier way to boot NT to dos and have it read the full content of the NTFS drive so that I am able to delete the recycler folder, because its beyond me......

The solution is to not delete the URL cache using any other means than IE. Right-click the desktop icon, select properties, then hit the delete button. It will clear everything out for you.
Try restoring the file you deleted, and do it this way. It should work.

I am having a similar problem in NT 4.0 Server. There is apparently a url in my recycle bin that only shows up when I am trying to run a virus scan and the virus scan locks up when it gets to that file. The weird thing is that you cannot see the file there and I cannot find a way to get rid of it. The recycle bin is empty when you open it so I cannot even restore the file. At a command prompt it says "file not found" when I try to delete all the files under the recycler directory. Even when I change directories to the specific SID directory under recycler and do DIR it shows no files. BUT when I right click on the Recycler forder in NT explorer it says there are 4 files in 2 folders. The virus tool I am trying to run has to scan through all files and folders, it is a removal tool for a specific virus I cannot exclude a directory. When it gets hung on that file I can see that it is some kind of URL and then I get a Dr. Watson and the tool stops. The Dr Watson doesn't tell me anything. What can I do to get rid of those files? On Microsoft's website I found a document telling me how to delete a corrupt recyler folder altogether, but it will not work. If I try to delete the folder it says "directory not empty." Someone HELP!
