I'm wanting to setup an e-mail system for a small office of about 12 people. Should I just install exchange server and be done with it, or what other alternatives might I investigate. The system will need to run on Windows and allow users to access their mailbox from anywhere in the world.

You should also look into hardware called a Team Internet Box. For a small office it's Ideal. Go to their site http://www.apexxtech.com/ With one ISP 28.8 dialup acct. for $20 bucks a month I'm able to setup and manage over 50 email accts. They have different flavors of hardware. You should look into it.
