Hello,

system description:
IBM Netfinity 5000, internal and external Raid 5 system; internal Raid 5 o.k.

external Raid 5 connected via Adaptec 2100S raid controller.
6 Hdds, 4 defined in Raid 5, one hot spare, one outside Raid/ not as hot spare defined

one disk in Raid 5 system stopped working;
adaptec storage manager v3.03 indicated the disk is not available, Raid5 impacted.

Problem as at now is, that the storage manager software is hanging and can not be stopped from the task manager (not responding)

indefinite status of rebuild, looks like there is no write activity on the Hdd-stack.
Red LED is showing that the HDD SCSI ID 05 is the one that is impacted.

In order not to risk data loss, we have not rebooted the server, not to interrupt the rebuild process.

Data on the external HDD stack are partly accessible, some network shares are even not available from the explorer on the server
itself. "Device not accessible" or "error performing inpage operation" are the two
reproducable error messages occuring.

Can somebody advise on this.
The data are rather important and no recent backup is available.

Thanks
Joe

You are in a catch-22 situation. You need to get into the raid controller bios.

First off you should not lose any data shutting down the server. Only if you lost two disks would your raid5 array and the data it contains be lost.

The defined hot spare should have failed over immediately when the drive died. Fact it did not tells me something was not configured correctly or perhaps the spare is also bad.

You need to reboot. I would suspect the hung server app is preventing a rebuild. Any way you go you have to get into the raid bios.
