Does anyone know why the Product ID in the registry does not match the one entered when installing NT? I have a Product ID in the format but the registry has a completely different string of numbers w/o the OEM???

Sorry the format in my previous msg did not show up...the Product ID on the official holograph license thingy is in the old format (I tried using # signs in the previous post, but they 'disappeared'!)

What I am wondering is why isn't the Product ID value in the Registry the same as the value in the "Registered To" area of My Computer? This value seems to be converted in some way from what is typed (i.e. the value on the key on the CD case) during installation.
We are in the process of making sure our PC's have a license with the number listed in the OS on a certificate somewhere.

RE:
Product key-used during installation.
Product ID-used when contacting ms support. The key is on the cd case and is needed to install windows. The ID is different and is generated by setup (not on the case).
These two numbers are different.

I guess my situation is special, then. Like I said, mine are identical. The OEM Product ID I entered is from the Certificate of Authenticity (CD Case and Workstation Manual), and the registry key are the same. :) I've used this same number to reinstall three times.
Maybe it's a different situation from what you describe because it's an OEM number.

The OEM number from the case is called the product key not the product ID.
The product key allows you to install. the product id is generated by windows and gives you access to support. Right click my computer choose properties. you see it under your name.
If they are identical i dont know what to tell you. These numbers have different amount of digits.

Yes. I know where the numbers are located. :) Exactly the same in the system properties and in the Registry. Go figure. :)
