Hi!!!
I need your help, because I have problems installing the driver of a 3com ethernet card. The erros said:"Problems with 3com 3c90x adapter driver, this part of the computer is not working" (something like that. I'm workin in a NT System, and try to install other driver but never works, could you help me. thanks.

Be aware that 3com use different drivers for their cards, make sure you have used the right driver....If the card is not new, make sure it hasn't been set before to a conflicting irq or address.

I know this comes almost a year after the fact but.... late is better than never!! Clean and reinstall the driver

Error: "The IPX/SPX-compatible Protocol failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified." in the Event Viewer

Error: "The NetBEUI Protocol failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified." in the Event Viewer

Cannot log onto preferred server

IPX/SPX is not bound to the Network Interface Card

Trouble with installation

Cannot see other computers on network

Error: "At least one service or driver failed during startup. Cannot find the file comsmd.exe"

Cannot see other computers in Network Neighborhood

On-board adapter listed in Network>Adapter tab

On-board adapter in Control Panel/Devices icon is set to Automatic

Clean and reinstall the driver


Any computer

Compaq Deskpro 5120

OS: Microsoft Windows NT 4.0


Driver was just updated; previous installation method was unknown


The protocol files were not copied to the system during the installation of the driver for the NIC

The Service Pack was never installed or it was not reapplied after the NIC was installed


Remove and reinstall the driver for the 3C90x NICs in Windows NT 4.0:
1. Remove the driver:
a. Click START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>NETWORK
b. Click Adapters tab
c. Highlight the 3Com NIC
d. Click Remove
e. Click OK
f. Restart NT, when prompted
Note: A service failing to start error may occur on start up. This is normal, because the drivers are not loaded for the NIC.
2. Install the driver:
a. Click START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>NETWORK
b. Click Adapters tab
c. Click Add
d. Click Have Disk
Note: The following instructions are for EtherDisk driver version 4.0
e. Path out to EtherDisk 1 (type a:\)
f. Click OK
g. Insert EtherDisk 2 when prompted
h. Click OK
3. Add desired protocols
a. Click Protocol tab
b. Add desired protocols
4. Click OK to close Network icon
5. When prompted for NT files, path out to the i386 directory on the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM
Note: If the CD-ROM drive letter is E, type E:\i386
6. Do not restart NT when prompted
7. Apply, or re-apply, Service Pack 3
8. Restart NT when prompted


Clean and reinstall the driver for the 3C90x NICs in Windows NT 4.0:
1. If the computer does NOT contain an on-board adapter, skip to step 3
2. Disable the on-board adapter
a. Click START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL
b. Double-click Devices icon
c. Highlight the on-board adapter and click Startup button
d. Change setting from Automatic to Disabled
e. Close Devices icon
f. Open Network icon, in the Control Panel
g. Click on Adapter tab
h. Remove on-board adapter
3. Remove the driver:
a. Click START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>NETWORK
b. Click Adapters tab
c. Highlight the 3Com NIC
d. Click Remove
4. Remove all protocols
Note: Write down all settings
a. Click Protocol tab
b. Remove all protocols
5. Restart NT
Note: A service failing to start error may occur on start up. This is normal, because the drivers are not loaded for the NIC
6. Install the NIC
a. Click START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>NETWORK
b. Click Adapters tab
c. Click Add
d. Click Have Disk
Note: The following instructions are for EtherDisk driver version 4.0
e. Path out to EtherDisk 1 (type a:\)
f. Click OK
g. Insert EtherDisk 2 when prompted
h. Click OK
7. Install the protocols
a. Click Protocol tab
b. Add desired protocols
8. Click OK to close Network icon
9. When prompted for NT files, path out to i386 directory on NT CD
Note: if CD ROM drive letter is E, type E:\i386
10. Do not restart NT when prompted
11. Apply, or re-apply, Service Pack 3
12. Restart NT when prompted


To bypass the installation of the dRMON SmartAgent into Windows NT 4.0:
1. Click START>PROGRAMS>WINDOWS NT EXPLORER
2. Insert EtherDisk Disk2 into the floppy drive
3. Click on the floppy drive, in Explorer
4. Double-click on the oemsetup.inf file
5. Change the option to NO, under the [IntstallOptions] section:
Note: The change will look like this:

[IntstallOptions]
Install_dRMON = "NO"
Install_3NIC_Diag = "YES"
Install_PACE = "YES"
Install_Shortcuts = "YES"


6. Click FILE>EXIT>YES, this will exit and save the changes made
7. Install the NIC using the steps in the first fix above



To bypass the installation of the 3Com Windows diagnostic software into Windows NT 4.0:
1. Click START>PROGRAMS>WINDOWS NT EXPLORER
2. Insert EtherDisk Disk2 into the floppy drive
3. Click on the floppy drive, in Explorer
4. Double-click on the oemsetup.inf file
5. Change the option to NO, under the [IntstallOptions] section:
Note: The change will look like this:

[IntstallOptions]
Install_dRMON = "YES"
Install_3NIC_Diag = "NO"
Install_PACE = "YES"
Install_Shortcuts = "YES"


6. Click FILE>EXIT>YES, this will exit and save the changes made
7. Install the NIC using the steps in the first fix above



To bypass the installation of the PACE configuration software into Windows NT 4.0:
1. Click START>PROGRAMS>WINDOWS NT EXPLORER
2. Insert EtherDisk Disk2 into the floppy drive
3. Click on the floppy drive, in Explorer
4. Double-click on the oemsetup.inf file
5. Change the option to NO, under the [IntstallOptions] section:
Note: The change will look like this:

[IntstallOptions]
Install_dRMON = "YES"
Install_3NIC_Diag = "YES"
Install_PACE = "NO"
Install_Shortcuts = "YES"


6. Click FILE>EXIT>YES, this will exit and save the changes made
7. Install the NIC using the steps in the first fix above



To bypass the installation of the 3Com shortcuts into Windows NT 4.0:
1. Click START>PROGRAMS>WINDOWS NT EXPLORER
2. Insert EtherDisk Disk2 into the floppy drive
3. Click on the floppy drive, in Explorer
4. Double-click on the oemsetup.inf file
5. Change the option to NO, under the [IntstallOptions] section:
Note: The change will look like this:

[IntstallOptions]
Install_dRMON = "YES"
Install_3NIC_Diag = "YES"
Install_PACE = "YES"
Install_Shortcuts = "NO"


6. Click FILE>EXIT>YES, this will exit and save the changes made
7. Install the NIC using the steps outlined above
