Hello everyone,

I have a Windows NT4 Server. It has a shared folder called "Users" where all the user folders are located. If user A tries to open user's B folder; he gets an Access Denied" error.
Now here is my problem. In order for the administrator to get access to the folder (to copy it with its contents to another location/server) he needs to "Take Ownership" and after he completes the task he needs to "Give Ownership Back".
This is not good as I have 835 users.

I have tried to add the Administrator with full rights unsuccesfully.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Harry

I am a bit surprised that the admin has to take ownership. I have only had to do this when I want to delete folders.

Start by making sure no file level security options are enabled. You don't need them.

I would assign administrator to the admin group to "users" and check the box to include all subfolders.

Admin should be able to copy without issue.

Each user folder should have "everyone" with access denied and only that user assigned with full rights. Admin should also be there with full rights.

If this doesn't correct your issue post back with who is assigned at "users" and assignments on one users folders and files for an example.

Thank you for your reply. Two things:
- I am not sure hot to set file level security.
- Assignments are as follows:
-- Administrators --> FULL
-- Everyone --> LIST
-- Applications --> LIST
-- SYSTEM --> FULL

When I right click on the shared user folder and go to security and then permissions and select both boxes for folders and files - I get an error message that access is denied to the user's folder (for every user until I hit cancel).

I didn't set up the server. Is there a chance the other guy has screwed me up by not giving admin righs?

Thank you,
Harry
