While downloading a Windows update related to Outlook Express, etc. (at dial-up speed), I was attempting to accomplish some other work. I failed to close some apps before the long download/direct update was complete, including Outlook Express (yes, I know how stupid that was . . . ). Upon rebooting there is an error and Event Viewer states "point to point protocol engine was unable to load the module," referring to "Source: RemoteAccess." Remote Access Connection and Autodial Managers use that module and won't run. Predictably, that denies my internet usage on that machine. My friend suggested that I try re-loading WindowsNT, which scares me, significantly. When I attempt to check the "connection" properties in Outlook Express, the application crashes. The other properties tabs function properly.
Incidentally, on that same machine, "Windows Explore" hangs on shutdown. The problem seems to be a mere annoyance and is unrelated to this new problem, as it preceded it by months. The "Wait/End Task/Cancel" dialog box appears and the system completes shutdown with an "End Task" pick.
'Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Ray

I had the same thing happen to me. The Remote Access isn't initializing either. I then deleted and re-installed the RAS but to no avail. I'm also getting the loadqm.exe error. The IE6 won't connect, neither will ICQ or MSN messenger.

So far, the only thing that seems to work is Netscape. Anything having to do with MS and connecting to the internet has been fried.

I have a lovely collection of Stops in the Event Viewer, so I'm sure it will provide me hours of entertainment.

Good thing that worm won't get me. No one can take control of my system now ...not even me! Thanks, MS for ensuring my security!

tjej,

What are you going to try, next? I am almost desperate enough to re-format the primary partition and re-install NT.

You will laugh when I tell you that I am writing this from my old, reliable, 486 w/14.4kB modem--ha!

You guys could try deleting the PPTP protocol (and RAS) and then try reloading both. Or completely uninstall networking and reloading.

Don't forget to service pack it again once you're done. Unlike W2k and XP, NT overwrites the newer (SP'd) drivers (no driver cache).

You may want to also service pack IE and Outlook Express once you're done.

NT's repair procedure will unfortunately revert everything back to original, so I wouldn't recommend that route.

Hi Michael & Ray,

I think I'll try to delete all the networking tomorrow. So far I've tried just about everything else - deleted and reinstalled RAS, reinstalled Service packs, reinstalled patches, etc., searched through registry files, reinstalled IE and ICQ. Nothing worked.

My only saving grace is that I had an old Netscape version still on my desktop, so I downloaded the latest version of Netscape with it. It works! ICQ also works but only if it's run within Netscape. Bizarre.

My pal Magnus Lindqvist from Stockholm is the newly appointed Manager of Program Security for Microsoft in Redmond. Magnus, if you're reading this ... I'm gonna beat you with my Microsoft Ergonomic Keyboard if you had any part in creating this Security Patch. It was worse than Windows 95! (And I didn't think that was possible.) Helvete!!! Jag är så arg!

Microsoft have admitted they messed up an update which disables RAS - it will be fixed 'soon'! DO NOT bother reinstalling anything as it will not fix problem!

Ok ...I found the fix to this mess:

Go to your Add/Remove Programs in your control panel. Remove (Uninstall) fix 823980 then 823803. It should work. The reason has to do with the kernel32.dll, and this will bring back your original kernel32.dll file.

It worked for me. :)

I had a NT 4 server (spanish) and the same problem. I remove all hotfix and reaplied sp6a (i had a problem with sp6a because when I updated IE6, it took my system to 128bits and you don´t have a 128bits sp6a for spanish so I had to cheat the sp6a not to check the encryption level). Before reaplying sp6a the problem is still here. I also applied then all hotfix (except the %&$#@% ones) and nothing change.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Pablo

Sigh!

I followed the advice aboce and uninstalled 823980.

And now all the server gives me is a blue screen at bootup and this text:
"STOP C000021a Fatal system error
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000080.
The system has been shut down."

The server then restarts over and over again.

Any ideas are more than welcome!

Best regards,
Erik

Response # 6 worked great for me on my RAS server.

This morning, I read another site that suggested the same fix would work on my webserver, which had stopped serving web pages after being updated. After removing the first hotfix, though, just like the guy in response #9, I get the BSOD, and can't get past it. Attempting to repair the installation didn't work.

Hello everyone, the fix in response #6 didn't work for me. This is not a good situation for us because we use RAS everyday. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I have removed RAS and reinstalled after removing fix 823980 then 823803 and still no luck. Your help is greatly appreciated.

This morning after installing some windows xp updates, I got the same horrid message as Erik in #9-
c000021a fatal system error
and a blue screen. Tried to repair with the XP cd but THAT quits after a few minutes- freezes, and now xp is stuck in a continual loop, from the abovementioned bluescrren message to attemting to boot xp and back over and over. Scant improvement. Spent 5 hours on the phone with dell support and now my only option is to install a new hard drive. Any advice/info is appreciated! I have no idea what is happening and hate to lose everything.

ok, after much ado about this, which I am not even going to touch. I have found this to work on my workstation I have been married to for the last week! This WS has RAS on it, and the sp6 reinstalled, Also, you can go and put all the patches on afterwords, and kernel32 wont be replaced.
Here's the deal..
The kernel32.dll file needs to be switched out for a different one. It will not work with RAS. I have seen that the july 16, 2001 version will work, but I personally used the july 25, 2003 version. You can get this if you download the fix for patch, and run it.. Yes this is for the server, and that is why when you get the message that its for the server, you need to go explore, and take the kernel32.dll file out of the temp file the patch creates in the root of c: It will be called a bunch of numbers, and should be listed relatively first in the alph listing of folders. OR you could just do a search for all the kernel32's out there. Copy the file to a known location. Then exit the message window telling you the patch is for server only. It will clean up after itself and delete all the temp files.
Now you need to swap it out. While there are a few ways to do this, I personally could not get the INUSE to work. What I did find is that this procedure works great, and is easy to do. ( Thanks John Navas)
link to support doc http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q181/3/45.asp
Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
Locate the following key in the Windows registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manag
Create a new value using the following information:
Value name: PendingFileRenameOperations
Data type : REG_MULTI_SZ
Value data:
\??\c:\temp\kernel32.dll
!\??\c:\winnt\system32\kernel32.dll

Note that the value data is typed on two separate lines.
\??\ on first line and
!\??\ on second line.
Quit Registry Editor.
Restart the computer.
Confirm that you have internet capability, and RAS is working. Make sure to get other updates. I did notice that for me winupdate would not put in bad patch again.

Hope this helps you fellow Workstation users with this problem. Any questions, you can reach me at email jon.reinbold at Brillcast.com

I think I'm unlucky. I have NT4 WS and had exactly the same problem as described in this thread. Spent the day on the phone with every tech support who would listen to me: Xircom (now Intel!), Gateway (no longer in Europe!), and even Microsoft itself.

Bad news for NT4 WS users: it's no longer supported as of July 31, which is why the patch discussed above was only for NT Server.

However, I whined long enough that the MS chap helped me, and we discovered that uninstalling the faulty patch DID roll back the kernel32.dll to the July 16, 2001 version, which got rid of the RAS errors in the Event Viewer and therefore that problem has been solved. However, I still cannot make a connection to my DSL router/DHCP server; can't even ping it. Something wrong with my Network card? I'll call Xircom-cum-Intel tomorrow again.

Anyone still in the same boat as me? Fixed in appearance but failing in essence?
