Hello Friends, I need help doing a clean install on my comp. It currently has NT on it but is so junked up with garbage I would just like to reinstall. I have the CD and startup disks. I am not famillar with NT at all and would appreciate detailed instructions on formatting and installing this system if possible. Thank you very much, Alan.

Hey Alan, just run setup. It will give you an option to reformat or even repartition the drive if you want. Choose to reformat and follow instructs.

Following on from Jesses's post, you could also follow the route detailed in:

http://www.computing.net/windowsnt/wwwboard/forum/11598.html

refers to losing '98 initially but I think you can sse how to apply it all?

Use a DOS 6.22 or '9x boot-disk to remove the NT partition. If you choose to use NT set-up\create/delete partitions option to delete your present installation, drop out from it once partition(s) gone and run Fdisk etc. via the route detailed in the above link...?

But then again... you could just install a 'fresh' version of NT, giving it a slightly different name (e.g. winnt-2) so as to avoid confusing the versions. Once installed, boot to it, set the default OS to be the new version; then via Explorer, delete the original version, and edit the boot.ini to remove references to it... (Gone this route more than once in the past...)

Do NOT delete any of the boot/start-up files...

Then defrag the HD (providing you have a util...?)

Job done.

The latter option (second install) is probably the easiest route to go... (you will obviously have to re-install all applications). Obvious benefit is that all data will be preserved... (but I'd still back up anyway).

1. Start with the startup floppy disk putting CD ROM in the drive.
2. Whatch when it ask for choosing either Upgrade/Repair/New Installation.
3. Press N for New Installation
4. At one point it will show you the existing partitions.
5. Press D to Delete and then and then L.
6. Delete all partition(s) you have on the Hard drive.
7. If the hole hard drive is less than or equal to 4GB, just Hit enter to install on the unpartitioned drive. It will automatically take you to select File system (FAT/NTFS).
8. If the Hard drive is more than 4GB you have to create partition less than or equal to 4GB by pressing C.
9. Proceed with the installation.

Good Luck.
