I have a Dell Dimension XPS D266 with 96RAM. It has NT4 SP6 and IE5.50. It is one of 12 machines on a LAN going through a router/cable modem to the internet.
I can ping internet (and internal LAN) machines with response but can not get a web page on the browser, "Page cannot be displayed...".
There is no proxy server - I checked the LAN settings - all fine. I checked the TCP/IP settings - all fine. IPCONFIG/ALL looks fine.
Thinking it might be a browser problem, I tried downloading an http page on another machine on the LAN and viewing it on the problem machine. The browser CAN display the downloaded http page. I also installed Netscape Communicator to eliminate the idea that it was a browser problem. Netscape also can NOT get to a website.
Hmm.... Maybe it's the difference between the protocols - ping (which uses udp, right?) and http. So I uninstalled/reinstalled the TCP/IP protocol stack. Still nothing.
Hmm... Maybe Port 80 is not turned on. That's the one that http comes in over, right? I checked the C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\services file and port 80 is not listed. Alas, it is not listed in the file on a working computer either. Just on the off chance... I copied over the services file from a working computer but it did not remedy the problem. (I changed it back).
What gets me is that ping works - so I HAVE connectivity. Why can't I get the browser to work?
Anyone?

Port 80 is only the return path for HTTP requests. Each machine making the request will open a random port (up around 2500 or something like that).
Run a port scanner on the problem machine and you can see which ones it's opening.
I don't think this will fix your problem as the other machines are working fine. But it may point you in the right direction.

Have you checked that there are no port restrictions in the network settings?
Also, is the Gateway setting correct?
p.s. For info, Ping uses ICMP not UDP, HTTP uses TCP, but yes it does use a different protocol (both still IP though).
What exactly is the error reported by the browser? is it an http error (eg. 404) or just a browser error?

I tried http://207.25.71.5 last night and still got the "Page cannot be displayed...." error.
I can ping www.microsoft.com so I think the DNS name resolution is working (or how could it resolve to the ip address?)
BTW - Thanks for helping me with this...

if you got a response from pinging Microsoft.com, then something is definitely wrong. MS (and many other big sites like CNN, MSN) have ICMP echo turned off.

HEY ALL! I'm writing from the offending computer! Unbeknownst to me, Microsoft Proxy Client was loaded. I uninstalled it and now everything is peachy keen.
Thanks for all your help.

Interesting...I read all the responses for Valerie's ping works, browser doesn't work and need to solve me own problem. NT server 4.0 once had proxy server running with RAS to share a modem for the server and other computers on the LAN. The proxy client was also installed on the server for the server to use proxy.
I removed the proxy server and proxy client (I think) from the NT server and now the server works for about a week connecting to Internet email servers, then it will stop - the browser will also not work, but ping does work with dns or ip addresses on the Internet. To get is working, I restart the server, again it works for another week?
Uhm...could it be the proxy client(which I thought I uninstalled) somehow interfers only sometimes? When the proxy client was removed...did it leave something behind-if so, how do I clean it out?Any ideas on this?
