I know this will sound stupid, but I need your help. I have 5 computers that are set up as NT Workstations. I want to clear them and put in Win98. The issue is that they request a password. I put it in and then it says it cannot do anything due to lack of server. All I want to do is wipe them out and replace the OS. How do I get them to read the Win98 disc/ Thanks.
If they have NTFS file system, you will need to use a NT or Win 2000 CD to boot from and remove the NTFS partition (and change it to FAT at the same time), then from there you will be able to install Win 98. (But why??)
Also, the file system partition needs to be 2 gig or smaller when using FAT16. If they are bootable into NT still, go to the 'C' drive and check properties to see what file system is running on it.
Get a ME or 98 boot diskette containing cdrom drivers plus fdisk and format.
Boot up on the diskette. Go into fdisk and delete the nondos partition. Next choose create primary partiton and use the whole drive. Exit and reboot. Come backup on the diskette and format c: /s. Once complete pull the diskette and see if you boot to the c drive. Reboot with the diskette in and go to the cdrom drive. Start the 98 install from cd and you are off and running.
You can also use delpart.exe [found on the web] to remove the ntfs partitons if your version of fdisk is too old [ME's boot diskette and fdisk/format work great]
