Subject: "out of memory" error in IIS4.0
Comment:

I am running a webserver on winNT4.0 on a PII 300 that uses Microsoft Access and ASP pages to update a weather station information page every 15 minutes (weather.uwaterloo.ca). I run a script in Access every 15 minutes which imports a text file into an Access database.

It had been running fine for 2 years. But, ever since I installed Service Pack 6 in November 1999 (which upgraded IIS to 4.0) every 2 days I get an "out of memory" error in Access when it tries to run the importing script and it stops updating the page. I intalled 128 more megs of RAM (for a total of 194) and I still get the error every 2 or 3 days.

Any help would be appreciated.

When you upgraded your memory did you also increase the size of your swap file....

I am new to NT so this is just a thought.

Frank,
Unless you do it correctly, Service pack 6 will edit your SWAP file, such as the above post said, so you need to get some expert info, (unless you know how to fix your SWAP FILE) but thats the trouble. Things changed critically when you installed that Service Pack 6

This is Frank again,

I have decided to uninstall Service Pack 6 to see if I can get back to the way things were. I'll report back next week.

This is Frank for the final time, just thought I should close up this thread.

So even after I uninstalled the WinNT Service Pack 6 installation I still got the "out of memory" error every two days. I then installed the Office 97 Service Pack 2 and then it wouldn't run the Access macro to update the database (it gave me an error something like "database is locked by user ..."). After 4 hours I figured out that it just didn't like that the file I was importing had a *.dat extension, when I changed it to *.csv it started working. That was 3 weeks ago and since then it has only gone down once on what I think was an unrelated error.

As it is working I'm scared to try and reinstall WinNt service Pack 6.

Frank
