Subject: Odd WINS server IP address |
Comment: Hi - I am trying to set up a WINS service on a NT4 server. On starting the WINS Manager program I have 1.13.0.184(\\HERMES) in the left hand pane, where HERMES is the name of the server. The real IP of the server is different to this. As this is the first time I have looked at using WINS can someone explain why the IP is different to what I would expect? Server HERMES is on a static IP. Thanks in advance - bowza

Reply: (edit)Hi Steve, I tried what you advised, and now in addition to HERMES appearing with the real IP address in the left hand pane, I get a second erroneous entry for HERMES again with IP 1.10.0.184 Confusing! I tried to remove and add the service again but that doesn't seem to change things... I have checked the HOSTS file on this server but there are no entries for HERMES, any other ideas where this erronoeus IP is coming from? Thanks again - bowza

Reply: (edit)I think the source of the unexpected IP is connected with IPX/Netware protocols installed on this server. Setting WINS up on another server doesn't give the same problems...
