Comment: I brought in a new 2000 Server box and added it to my current domain. I demoted the previous PDC to a BDC, installed the new 2000 server as another BDC. I made the 2000 server the WINS, DNS and DHCP server- taking it all away from the previous PDC. All of the sudden, the old PDC (which is now a BDC) desides to turn into a workstation. I am unable to start NetLogon due to erro 1787 (the SAM database on WINNT Server does not have a comupter account for this workstation and a trust relationship). How can I make the server that sees himself as a workstation a server again??

Reply: (edit)The issue is Trust Relationships. You can reestablish the trust relationship by using the NETDOM command, issued from one of the network clients. And, in fact, you issue the command from a client, while logged in as a local (as opposed to a domain member) user. If you don't have NETDOM.exe, you can get it from the NT 4.0 Resource Kit for IT Professionals. See: http://www.computerbooksonline.com/windows/wksresk.htm Better still would be to find a friend who has the CD. It's got to be available elsewhere for less, if you do decide to buy it.

Reply: (edit)I'm afraid I have no idea what you are talking about. Since this is the NT forum I assume you are talking about a NT domain. If so, you did not install a w2k server as a BDC. It's impossible. There are no BDCs in w2k and you can not install a w2k server into an existing NT domain. Maybe if you could be a bit more clear on what you did and the roles of the computers we could help a bit better. Which machine is the PDC. If you demoted the PDC to BDC, which machine was is now the PDC. The only way to get a w2k server into your existing NT domain is to upgrade the OS of the NT PDC.

Reply: (edit)you can modify the registry in order to make the server think itself as a workstation.

Reply: (edit)Acutally, W2K servers CAN join NT domains, but only as member servers, not domain controllers.
