Subject: NTLDR missing working under Win NT
Comment:

I´m working under Windows NT since the first day we bought the computer (i´m talking about my computer at work).
Today i was working and suddenly the screen turned blue, so I rebooted my computer and... i missed the ntldr file.

I´ve checked several web pages, and in all of them they said that the cause is because yo are installing WinXP on Win 98, or something like that. Anyway, I have always worked on Win NT and I have no clue of what could have happenned.

I did everything I read. Copy the reboot floopy from another computer under Windows 98, and it seemed to work... the only problem is that it iniciates under windows 98, not NT.
So I´m stucked there, in the MS-DOS screen. I think I´ve lost my operating system and all my data...

So if any of you knows how to start it under win NT please, let me know.
My computer has never used any other Windows than NT!!!

I´m a little tired of this. I think I´m going to send my computer to hell.

Thanks in advance to everyone, and sorry for the writing, I´m from Spain.

Ok, lets not panic.

First of all you need to figure out what is the file system on the computer. If it is FAt, you need to boot up from a floppy, and see what is on your C drive, do that and tell me what is on your C drive.

If your file system on all drives was NTFS, then you need to boot up fro an NTFS pro floppy thathas acess to all NTFS partitions and tell me what is on the C: drive.

If you are not sure what your file system is, you need to boot up froma s floppy run fdisk and see what the file system is. Or ask who made the computer for you.

Evene if we wont be able to fix the os, there is a good chance of getting all the data out of your computer

Run NT setup and choose the Repair option; allow it to inspect/repair system files.

You can use the ERD if you have it for this installation. (If you don't have an ERD then allow Repair to go ahead regardless; usually it will do what's required - as there is a copy of the repair info. on the drive anyway, and this will be used as appropriate.)

Repair 'should' restore (or replace) the missing (or damaged) ntldr, and thus allow you back in?

Once in OK, renew ERD and keep safe.

Sounds like you have experience the Q article on how NT can only see a partition up to 7.8gs.
I will assume that you have a single drive partition of larger than 7.8g, it does not matter if you use the whole space or not, but what happens is the key critical boot files are re written to an empty space on the hard drive for some reason, say a sp install, but anyways, these files are placed in a relative empty place, area beyond fragmentation, and possibly beyond 7.8g.
Two suggestions, Slave the drive in another NTFS based machine, and defrag the hard drive, or get Partition magic, and resize the partion to 7.5gs, this will move all needed files to less than the NT limits, and you should now boot.
Happens at my work all the time..

You can copy ntldr from the CD or another known good source; but a better route is to run the Repair sequence - with or without and ERD - and allow it to repair boot/start-up files.
