Been trying to install NT Server 4.0 on a Dell Dimension XPS D300. No matter what I do, the setup stops with "ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded. Error code is 4".
Why is it even trying to load the multi-processor executive on a uni-processor machine? I've tried running setup directly from the CD, I've made a new set of installation diskettes, I've repartitioned the hard drive, I've even installed Win98 first and then tried adding NT...
I've seen references to this error across the Internet, but no answers. Even Microsoft's KB only talks about it happening on old DEC Alpha machines.
Anybody?

have you fixed the problem with this damm error code nr 4
well i have the same problem and also everything ...formatting repartitioning and clearing the mbr ..even a low level format didn't seem to work
the only thing that worked in parts was win95
installation was fine but i couldn't load it because several *.vxd are corupt..
winxp also can't fix the problem while detecting scsi devices the system hang for 10 sec or so and then reboot's
how did you fix the problem ?
please help
Patrick

Same problem here trying to load XP Pro from the boot disks. When I put disk 2 in this same error comes up except it refers to error code 7. Can find no help on the net after 2 days.

I have also the same bug. I tried to install Windows XP,W2k or NT 4.0 and ever the system stops with a failure. The w2k server stopped with: Line 772 of the in file is invalid.
Have everyone any Help for this problem?

I have the same problem trying to upgrade Windows ME to windows 2000. If anybody knows what I can do, please email me.
Thanks,
Tony

Had this problem with clean boot to Windows 2000 installation. Fixed it today by setting BIOS to boot from CDROM and putting the Windows 2000 CD in. For some reason, installing this way rather than using the boot floppies makes this strange problem goes away! It is also MUCH faster to do the installation.

Had the same problem here, I actually replaced my mother board (ASUS) and CPU (AMD). I got around this problem by going into the BIOS and pulling the CPU speed back from the 1800 to 1100. Worked like a charm! Good luck!
By the way: When telling people your problems, it may help to say what equipment you have too!

I have the same problem with my computer.
I have a Abit VP6 with a PIII 866 (FC-PGA) and I have been attempting to install Windows 2000, but also get the problem with Windows 2000 Advanced Server. They both get NTKRNLMP Error Code 4. But in windows 98 it just freezes up.
The only luck I ever had with getting this machine to run was to install windows 98 on a hard drive in another system and put the drive in the Abit VP6 System.
Until I can fix this problem (Which I have had for like a year) I am stuck running a Celeron 300A :(

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE READ THIS FORUM
THIS IS HOW I FIXED MY PROBLEM

The exact error I had was file \ntkrnlmp.exe could not be loaded error code 4096. I was installing nt 4.0. As Mike suggested I tried installing from the cd instead of from floppy and it seems to be working now thanks Mike.
