I have a ntfs5 (xp) USB harddrive that I want to access from my NT4 Server. The ntfs5 is, of course, not recognized by NT4. Is there a driver I can get which will allow the NT4 system to operate on the NTFS5 file system? I don't have the option of converting the harddrive to NTFS4 (it's a clients drive). Thanks, Tom
NT can indeed recognize the newer (starting with 2000) version of NTFS. It depends on what exactly it is you're attempting to access.
Actions on Reparse points, and Sparce files cannot be performed, as is accessibilty to encrypted files. However disk quotas are ignored. So, it all depends on what you need to access.
The Iomega Backup Ext HD has backup data I want to access on NT4. The Iomega HD was created on an XP system, thus, with NTFS5. The NT4 system support recognizes the HD is connected but does not recognize the file system. My NT4 server is at SP6. It has no problem with my other USB 2 devices (A Zip drive and Jumbo)? Must be the file system, right?
As J. SUMN stated, NT4 can read NTFS5 file system, my NT4 does it. Mine won't write sometimes but WILL read. XP can use NTFS5.1, FAT32 or FAT16/FAT12, so you cannot assume that the drive is NTFS. NT4 cannot use FAT32 unless you install the patch from Mark Russinovich and Bryce Cogswell (FAT32, sysinternals.com).
Jubalsams, That's an interesting point. I DON'T know for a fact which file system format the Ext HD actually is (I ASSsumed it was NTFS5 because of the XP connection). Perhaps it is FAT32 and I need the patch to which you referred. I need to do more research. Thank you all for your thoughts and contributions. Tom
jubalsams, If your still following, you were right. The file system is FAT32 and the patch from Sysinternals has given me access to the data on the drive. Thank you very much for your insight and help. Tom
hiho, yes it is 5.1 but MS call it 3.1 so i as confused on what we call it. NT4 was 4.0 and 2K was 5.? an XP is .....

Langrto, glad you spotted the problem. The patch from sysinternals is slick ain't it? Note however that you cannot "create" a FAT32 partition with DM (i use PM8.01 to do this).
