Hi All,

I have a question on the NTFS "system group". I noticed it gets full control permissions by default when I create a new directory on the volume. Where would this come into play and why is it there? What happens if you remove the systems group permission.

Thanks Bob

The 'system' group is a built-in group that is created by the OS. It is basically your OS. This group comes into play with many applications and services that need access to the registry locations and files. If you delete it, you will almost certainly have problems. Applications may not run and your system will almost certainly have problems if it starts at all.

I would highly recommend you just don't even touch it.

Glen,

Would you leave it on all your Home directories as well? The interesting thing I have discovers is the WinNT directory by default does not have the system group listed in it's permission. All subdirectories of WinNT do. I would love to know the reasoning there.

Bob
