Hello,

I recently acquired a PII PC with Windows NT4.0 Workstation. I am familiar with Win3.1 and Win9x, but not NT.

Is there any benefit, for a stand alone machine, in 'upgrading' this to NT4.0 Server?

Does NT4.0 accomodate DOS, Win3.1 and Win9x programmes or is some adaptation necessary?

Are any system tools included or available anywhere?

Thank you for any assistance.

Regards,

J.G.

Depending what you want to do with the machine.
For home/office NT4 is fine; make sure you run Sp6a
All Windows 32 app. will run on your NT machine
Dos is also available

Only defragmentation is not standard available
You can download Diskeeper Lite for free to do that job for you

If you need to know anything you can always drop a line in this forum.

Remember NT can not use Fat 32 and can not use USB !!!!

Succes

also remember that windows NT and beyond do not permit direct port and memory reads and writes except by kernel-mode drivers, meaning that some (many?) DOS apps will not run (especially games).

You can get your dos games to run in 16bit mode in NT with a little setup but it really slows everything down. If your a gamer try Win 95 or Win 2k you'll have a much easier time getting things to run properly. Aloha

Hello again,

One more thing; if the file system is FAT16 and not NTFS, is it OK to use the Win 9x versions of Scandisk and Defrag or will the differences between the two systems, Either in handling long file names or running within the GUI, cause problems?

Thanks everyone for your help.

J.G.
