I'm trying to make a networking between NT4.0 and Win98, but I can't connect it still.
Just to let you know I'm using BNC cable and NE2000 compatible and the lan driver is
"Realtek RTL8019(AS) ISA Pnp Ethernet NIC" in both of them.My config:
NT-box: Service: Browser,NetBios,RPC Config,Server,Workstation; Protocol: TCPIP, NWLink IPX/SPX; IP address: 192.168.0.1 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
W98-box: Service: Microsoft Client; Protocol: TCPIP, IPXSPX; IP address: 192.168.0.2 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0I've already settled up the domain name in client site same like in the server site, but whenever i try to login the message is "the domain server was not found to validate your password"
Have you suggestions for this?

Try to add your NT-server name in lmhosts to your W98-computer. (unless you are using DHCP) The lmhosts-file can be found on your windows-directory. The syntax is: IP-address
SERVERNAME servername. For example: 111.111.111.111 NTSERVER ntserver

What frame type are u set for. If you dont need IPX for novell take it off.
Can you ping each PC?
Is your NT Box a PDC? I assume it is since your getting the message "the domain server was not found to validate your password". If it isnt, you should be have both set as a workgroup not domain. Is there a computer account and user account on the PDC (if you're using one). Sometimes MS's messages are much help with login errors.

I have seen this when the NIC card is not configured properly. Make sure the NIC card is configured properly. Look in your device manager and see if the NIC card is listed. Make sure it is not listed under other categories like "other devices"..
Hope this helps...

Andy, NT doesn't support PnP, check your NIC again, TOP GUN may be right. You need a WORKGROUP, each machine should have a unique
name. Keep TCP/IP and NETbuei.good luck.

Similar problem. But, I assigned two identical IP addresses and got conflict message on both machines, listing MAC address of each other as well. Does it mean NIC is configured OK? Both PCs don't see each other with NetBEUI, either. Crossover cable has been checked.

http://www.helmig.com aka http://www.wown.com and have good read of Helmig's site (an excellent 'how to do it all...').
A couple of items to checkout (these are common issues where '9x, particularly '98, is invloved.
1. Do 'not' have the NIC adjacent to the AGP/PCI graphic card; issues relating to PCI steering/IRQ sharing/conflicts here; have at least one slot between them... Helmig discusses this in some detail.
2. Verify the the Mobo chipset(s) are current in terms of updates/patches; again particularly the '98 system. This is a common item relating both to '95 and '98, particularly '98...
Also test out the system using NetBeui only. Helimg will counsel using NetBeui as the ideal protocol for simple/SoHo LAN's; fewest problems, easiest to set-up, least demanding on resources. '98 installs TCP/IP by default; NT is whatever you choose... It would be wise to have just one installed initially, and maybe afterwards too, when it's all working...
Good luck,
LM-S
