You just need to install SP6 to bringit up to date. Service Pack 6 (AKA 6a) is the latest one, Microsoft do not intend to produce anymore for Winnt 4 especially as they are stopping free updates for NT4 at the end of the year.

6a is the latest or you can use 6 + the hotfix
Everytime you install or deinstall a program or make changes to drivers etc. you have to install again to avoid problems !!!!

To clarify/correct the above answer- it is NOT necessary to re-install the SP every time you install/deinstall a program. The only time you have to re-install a SP is when you do something where it asks for files off the original NT CD.

NT4 SP6 is included on the Freeserve Internet CD's that everyone always gets in the post. Save time instead of downloading.

After you have installed SP6a, you will need to install the SP6a security rollup plus any relevant hotfixes that you need (i.e.by that I mean that some things e.g. Front page server extension vulnerabilities will not be required if you are talking about NT workstation)

You can use the hotfix chain utility to gang all of the hotfixes together resulting in you requiring to only do one reboot rather than a reboot after every hotfix is added.

One good site (Rather than plowing through the wonderful world of Microsoft) is

http://windows.stanford.edu/downloads.shtml

which gives links to the latest downlads required for both NT and 2000.

An example script (this comes with the chain utility) that uses the hotfix chain utility would be thus....

@echo off
setlocal
set PATHTOFIXES=\\name of your machine\NT_hotfix

%PATHTOFIXES%\Q299444i.exe -z -m
%PATHTOFIXES%\Q305399i.exe -z -m
%PATHTOFIXES%\Q312895i.exe -z -m
%PATHTOFIXES%\Q313829i.exe -z -m
%PATHTOFIXES%\Q314147i.exe -z -m
%PATHTOFIXES%\Q320206i.exe -z -m
%PATHTOFIXES%\Q318138i.exe -z -m

%PATHTOFIXES%\q296861_W2k_spl_x86_en.exe

this script looks to a shared directory (in this case NT_hotfix) and runs each hotfix in turn and then runs the chain utility.

N.B. this script only uses the hotfixes relevant to that PC. You may need more or less for your PC.

Once this script has run, reboot your PC and you are then up to date

If I download SP6 for Workstation 4.0 (SP3 was factory installed), will I be able to utilize my USB ports for scanners, printers, midi-keyboards, etc.?

If not, does anybody have any suggestions as to how I might upgrade my NT 4.0 so I can take advantage of USB?

My NT 4.0 otherwise meets my needs and this has been such a stable o/s I hate to trade it for a "2000".

Any and all suggestions welcome. Many thanks in advance.
D.
