nt4 server files missing

Comment:
After a system hang I had to restart manually - all appeared to start fine.

Then a day or so later I noticed that LOTS of files were missing from a directory on the D partition. The free disk space remains the same so they may still be there although I cannot see them in windows.
The Oracle database app actually brings out these 'missing' files so I am even more sure that they are still there somewhere.

Anyone seen this type of thing before - if I run chkdsk I am worried that I will really lose the 'missing' files. I have a backup but as no free disk space has been created I don't have enough space for the restore.

Any clues?
Thanks

A restore doesn't consume more disk space then that backed up. Not sure what your thoughts are there.

You have to run chkdsk /f or /r to check the shape of the drive.

They mighta just somehow gotten their bits marked as hidden or system...the easiest way to tell is use file manager and under FM's "view" menu select 'by file type' and make sure 'show hidden/system files'is selected..if you see them now , or if the folder itself got marked invisible (can happen to folders too, not just files), you can just change it back.
Worth a shot......
