NT4 server error pollstation/tape

Hi,
Every time I try to run the default backup program or any other backup program that acesses the tape streamer I get an error message from NT4 server "Pollstation failed fatal error " then 2/5 times the tape drive is accessible but always refuses to execute a backup or most other operations. Is there something wrong with my tape drive? It is a SDT-7000 in a COMPAQ Machine(Proliant 800). Every thing else works fine.

What have you checked? The correct driver loaded? What software backup are you running? Errors in event viewer concerning the tape drive? Can you format or erase a tape? Tape drive cleaning required? Cables all connected tight? Tape manufacturer have any tests you can run or recommendations?
