Subject: NT4 Server.. Backup corrupt files
OS: NT4 Server
CPU/Ram: 850/512MB
Comment:

I just installed a fresh NT4 server (PDC) last week on a Dell Dimension 4100 as a trial to see if the setup would work or not.
850MHz
30GB 7'200rpm Maxtor (Intel Chipset drv installed)
512MB PC133
SiS900 10/100 NIC

The installtion went fine and everything seems to work fine on Monday, but the backup (Tapeware 6.2 on a Seagate 12/24DAT) is showing many errors and files not backing up, Tapeware people looked at the log and said that the OS may be corrupted and also many files are not backing up due to they are still open (almost 2000 files from total of 17'000), this cant be happening as all the workstations are shut down at 7pm, and the back up does not start until 10pm.

I had NAV Corp Edition installed on the server, but last night I removed that on advice from Tapeware, but the problem still there.

Could someone shine some light on this as its driving me nuts, I think I have covered everything, but somehow, I must have missed something.

Thanks for any help

It looks like something is still running on the server which appears to have files open. Obviously some files will always be open such as DNS & DHCP databases but 2000 out of 17,000 is rather high. Have you got any anti-virus software running scans at the same time? That could be the trouble.

your first step should be to run chkdsk /f

this will confirm or deny any file allocation issues. Next reapply service pack 6a. Next use ntbackup to a ntbackup formatted tape and see what the errors are.

I would look at Tapeware's log and determine which files are not OS related files. Concentrate on files that are regular text files, if they show up as a problem, to see what might be holding them open.

What exactly are the error messages? You can read the error log so what does it say?

Thanks for the help guys

Tapeware confirmed that the problem may be one or both of the two.

Faulty hardware (drive may need cleaning)

NAV is scanning the files during backup.
