I know NT4 keeps a hal record on hardware as I found out the hard way.
I am in the middle of replacing a server, but some of the SCSI drives had not yet arrived, but I need the server to be back working by monday morning. On SCSI-0 , I have a 9GB just for NT
On SCSI-2 , I have a 18GB Compaq (it should have been a 36GB 15Krpm but the supplier let us down)
Because we had ordered the drives last week and were so sure they be here by friday, we planned the task but no without the correct 36GB, we had to place a 18GB 7'200rpm drive in place, this drive will be ourely for data only.Question is, wehen when we get the 15k drive, can I just clone the data across from the 18GB without NT4 throwing a wobbler ?
Many thanks

I solved the problem by creating the NT4 boot diskettes and installed from these instead, but many thanks for your help.

I don't see a problem cloning the disk. First time you go into disk administrator after the clone it should ask to write a signature. It's OK to do and NT will then access the drive.
Seriously consider mirroring the OS and make sure you have a backup unit that can store the 36gig on one tape. I don't trust multiple tapes for backup since a failure of one tape in the series.
Glad to help :-)

Thanks
The data is taking up 12GB on the data HDD, but after compression (using WinRAR to test) showing under 2GB as 90% of the data are database and document files only.
The tape is a Archive Pyhoon 12/24GB running Tapeware.
I am planning to install a DVD-RW on the server also, so it will do a backup onto a DVD first, then a few hrs later, the tape backup will kick in, but as yet unsure what software will do the task. I am looking at Acronis TrueImage Servre now as it seem to be able to do that, but the price is a bit steep at around $400.
