I have a pretty old pc running nt4, and I want to add usb ports to the system. I've seen the pci cards which provide this facility. Are they compatible with NT, or will I have problems?

Dude,
Unfortunatelly, no versions of NT support USB ports. I checked this out with Microsoft on their Technet site.
Of course, they noted that all versions of Win2000 would support USB. This notice, of course, was around the end of last year, when everyone was waiting for Win2000 to come out.
If your old pc supports pci, then the cards will work, but you will need a USB driver. Microsoft does not plan to release one for NT4.0.
Check out BSQUARE's USB for Windows NT driver -

Yep! The boss ordered a couple of those neat HP scanners. I heard his beconed call one afternoon to find out why they would not work on the NT 4.0 workstations through the USB ports. After a short surf on the web I returned his call with the bad news. No USB support on NT 4.0. Sorry

Check out www.ionetworks.com and www.gleaf.com/ionetwork.asp. Yes, a ISA/USB card (around US$85) AND NT4 drivers. Unfortunately, though your computer will now have USB, your hardware driver writer may have believed the talk about no NT support for USB, and may helpfully prevent you from using it!
